NOTE: This is a story that I wrote on our Success Blog Net I felt it worthy to copy it here to help remind everyone of those not able to be at home.

In times past, men and women in the military communicated with their families through letters ( when they got through). Families worried over their husbands, wives, sons and daughters, never knowing when they would hear how their loved ones were. The stress on the soldiers, whose lives were on the line, fighting whether from beliefs or duty must have been unbearable at times.

Today, Soldiers and their families still write letters to each other but because of the advent of the internet, communicating has gotten a whole lot easier.

We as marketers, bloggers, people who just enjoy surfing the net take for granted all we do when it comes to chatting to our friends, our colleagues and to family members on all the different types of chats out there from YaHoo, MSN etc.

The other day, a very special young man , one I have known since he was a child, contacted me on FaceBook. We talked about this and as people do, I asked how he was doing, how his new family was all the things people ask to others.

There was a slight pause in the chat - His reply was - “I have not seen my family in months - I am in Afghanistan, but I hope to see them soon.” He then went on to say that because of the internet, he was able to talk to his wife and children, his friends and family.

He went on to say that he used the Facebook chat to keep up with his friends and family, to relax and have some fun.

There are I am sure many ways these days that soldiers and their families keep contact with each other on the internet, but to me, I will never look at FaceBook again in the same frivolous way. To me facebook is a miracle –It helped a young man reach out to me from a country that is at war.

When you are blogging, marketing or surfing, maybe take a pause now and again to think of the soldiers around the globe..who because of the miracle of the internet - the miracle of FaceBook, can communicate with those they love.
